Action for Happiness

Action for Happiness is a movement for positive social change. We’re bringing together people from all walks of life who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone. For fifty years we’ve aimed relentlessly at higher incomes. But despite being much wealthier, we’re no happier than we were five decades ago. At the same time we’ve seen an increase in wider social issues, including a worrying rise in anxiety and depression in young people. It’s time for a positive change in what we mean by progress.

the midnight union band

The Kilkenny based Midnight Union Band return to Brighton for a full band show. . A wonderfully vibrant mix of Americana, folk and classic 70’s blue-collar rock’n’roll this Irish band deliver politically charged songs bristling with intent and conviction one minute whilst charming their way right into your heart the next. Think Felice Brothers meets E-Street Band, with the social awareness of The Clash and you’ll have an idea of what to expect.

The musical seeds of The Union were first planted by long time harvesters of sound, Brian, Peter and Cian who had initially played together in an earlier Kilkenny based Alt-Rock band. However they soon realised that remaining as a three piece, they could never fully accomplish the scale and depth of sounds they all envisioned for the band. It was recruitment time and the senior member of the Union, Brian McGrath, was ready for the job.

One sunny city day, bassist and recruitment guru Brian stumbled across a young, raggedy singer/songwriter who was busking and hustling a lonely Kilkenny alleyway. Brian liked what he heard and, as the story goes, he took the kid off the streets and in a single stroke procured a voice for the band and a home for Shane Joyce. The songs soon began to rain down but Brian’s work was not yet finished. With the loss of a previous drummer it was again time for more recruiting. He eventually found gifted young drummer, John Wallace, through literally knocking on doors and the table was finally set for a musical Midnight feast

The Midnight Union Bands’ sound may best be described as a unique blend of Americana/Folk nestled with an alt-country twist. The bands’ songs range from the most poetic and tender of ballads to full-fledged bustling, high octane tunes bursting at the seams with energy, and rhythm. The Midnight Union Band is currently doing the rounds in the Irish gigging scene, with their heartfelt and energetic live performances soliciting rave reviews throughout the country from fans and reviewers alike.

CATALYST CLUB HORTICULTURE SPECIAL

Steve Bustin: Ghosts, Guns and Guerrilla Gardening

Gardening journalist and keen gardener Steve Bustin explores the life and times of one of Britain’s greatest plant collectors, bulb experts and gardening eccentrics, Ellen Willmott. Find out how to booby-trap a daffodil, how to let someone know what you think of their garden (without uttering a word) and who you should call when arrested for shoplifting.

Brian McClave: Flicker & Pulse

Brian dazzled Catalyst audiences many years ago with his 3D time-lapse films of the Aurora Borealis and the sun. This time around he’ll give a talk about his work in a Sussex walled garden before showing his extraordinary new film, Flicker+Pulse, a beautiful and poignant portrayal of time passing in a 300 year old Sussex walled garden. Using real-time and time-lapse footage, the film explores the relationship between the sun, the seasons, the plants and the people who work within the walls of the garden. Locked into the clock of the solar system, the garden performs its annual display, guided by the ritualistic human intervention of those passionately engaged with its soil.

The film takes the form of a contemplative visual poem with a stunning soundtrack by Wendy Rae Fowler. Flicker+Pulse could be described as the meeting point between Gardner’s World and Koyaanisqatsi.

Sassy Cabaret

Lets us whisk you away for a night of sheer decadence and delight, at this, our much anticipated Sassy Speakeasy!

This evening is, alas, one of our last, and for that reason, and many others, we intend to give you one hell of a show and a rather radically rhythmic after show party…..hosted by none other than the sleaziest sleaze of the seven seas, Brighton’s own DJ Peter Von Sleaze…..who will be coupling our dazzlingly delicious burlesque show with some of the finest electro swing and white mink style dance floor ditties you could ever want to dance your glittery little socks off to!

WHAT TO EXPECT:

An ambience of 1920’s speakeasy gorgeousness in a downstairs underground setting with a fabulous pay bar, candle lit tables and mood setting music
A cabaret show featuring some of the finest and down right devilish burlesque acts we have worked with over the past year and a half, along with some notorious newbies hand picked for their rather fiercely fantastic turns!

An after show and pre- show electro swing and white mink style musical element with the onus of staying on for a good old boogie after the show and mingling with the cast and crew on the dance floor….watch out for the Sir Floor Bitch though…he bites!
Dress code is, naturally, 1920’s inspired attire (be as creative as you like) and also glitter – we love lots of glitter!

Show starts PROMPTLY at 9pm – 11pm / after show boogying until the wee hours, prohibition style!
PLEASE NOTE

We endeavour to make the main Sassy Cabaret show a proper “sit down” affair.
We want you to get the best out of this experience.
If you turn up late you may have to share a table with others, so turn up as early as possible please.
Any group bookings please make yourselves known to the venue beforehand so that we can accommodate properly on the night.

Penelope Isles

+ Porridge Radio

PORRIDGE RADIO – 2017 will be Porridge Radio’s year. The greatest young band to emerge round these parts since knows when. Described by Everett True as ‘the greatest band in the world’ on the strength of one song.

PENELOPE ISLES – Penelope Isles are beachside, melodic pop/rock music from sunny Brighton, England. Brother and sister Jack and Lily Wolter, Becky Redford and Jack Sowton pack a dynamic kick with their live sound and capture their lucid dreaming, fuzz filled music with a DIY lo-fi approach. Originally from the Isle of Man, The Wolter’s recent move to Brighton to share their music with the world is well on its way. The music will charm you as it ranges from Cacophonous to tranquil and back again. The band are currently booking/playing shows to promote their debut album ‘Comfortably Swell’ (released on their own DIY label Wavey Head) as well as making new music and recordings all the time.

CAPT. LOVELACE – Born in Arcachon Bay, on the French Atlantic Coast, Beatrice settled in Norway and Germany, and now resides in the South of England. An adventurer, in love with the quaint European rail network that serves as an escape from the geeky computing world she inhabits for a living. She has shared stages with Tom Brosseau, Girlpool, Aldous Harding, Basia Bulat & The Burning Hell. She released her debut EP /* Preview Pane */ on Damnably in August 2015. She toured with Kath Bloom, as backing vocalist and percussionist in 2016. She’s now writing and exploring her native language for an upcoming release

ZOOM AROUND RAINBOW – ‘Zoom Around Rainbow’ is a Southampton based solo electronic artist that’s been described as ‘hardware rave dystopian’ and ‘Slower then glaciers, Harder then ecological collapse’ his sound carry’s a uncertain upbeat bounce, drenched in reverb with a melancholy haze.

INWARDS – “A childlike sound-world hides a slightly unnerving, psychedelic undertone, simultaneously pleasing restless feet and hazy minds.”
