Juan Wauters

+ Support

On the heels of 2019’s La Onda de Juan Pablo LP, Wauters is set to release his new album, Introducing Juan Pablo, out on May 31 via Captured Tracks. La Onda deJuan Pablo, allowed Wauters to r einvent himself and Introducing Juan Pablo serves as both a companion and prequel to that story. It’s a bit timeless: at the time the album was made, Wauters left it on stand-by. That’s why its title emphasizes it origin: to present Juan Pablo and, simultaneously, to reveal his inner journey.

Traveling continues to leave a mark on Wauters. His previous album, with its folkloric airs and its Latin roots, made that clear. Introducing Juan Pablo also embraces that spirit, although his main journey is internal. Introducing… exposes Wauters two worlds, his two languages, and his day-to-day life in the neighborhood and his life as an artist. Though Juan was born in Uruguay, he has lived in New York for a long time. “At first, I wanted to show another musical face for this series of records. For me, Juan Pablo is part of a more
personal search. And that has to do with migration: when you move to the United States, the second name ceases to exist. Since I moved here, I’m just Juan. But in Uruguay I’m Juan Pablo Wauters. I felt it was significant to retake my middle name.”

His immigrant’s side. His sense of belonging. His social life and his use of language. His need to work. And the even stronger need that his work doesn’t become monotonous. His dream of another possible world: a world where all worlds fit. Juan Wauters went through all this to introduce us to Juan Pablo. They are the same person: one among the whole crowd. He is here to share his songs, his field recordings, his videos and his live performances. Everything comes from the same creative head. Everything springs up with the same intention – not intentional at all – to express himself freely.

Action For Happiness

Discovering your Passions

When we are doing what we love and what is important to us, we feel happier, more productive and healthier. Science has shown that when we are passionate in our daily life, we experience more engagement, life satisfaction and wellbeing.

It sometimes feels like we need to actively pursue our ‘passion’ and that this is something unattainable. In this workshop you will realize that your passion does not have to be big and all encompassing. We are often already much more aware of the things that we are passionate about but don’t recognize it.

This workshop will focus on the science of passion and how to develop it so you can experience more passion in your life, both at work and in your free time. We will discuss what passion is, the difference with strengths and do several interactive activities. These will focus on identifying what you love doing, why you love that and finally how much time you actually spend doing it. At the end of the session, we will all make an action plan in which we come up with ways that we are going to do more of activities that we are passionate about in the upcoming weeks.

See this video by Angela Duckworth on Grit, a combination of passion and perseverance: https://www.ted.com/talks/angela_lee_duckworth_grit_the_power_of_passion_and_perseverance. To learn more about passion from one of the biggest researchers in the field, listen to this podcast by Vallerand: https://www.michellemcquaid.com/podcast/mppw05-bob-vallerand-psychology-passion/

Anna Maasland recently received her MSc in Positive Organisational Psychology with a focus in her master thesis on passion and how to develop it. She has a strong background in positive psychology and is passionate in helping and enabling others to be their best.

This workshop has been given to several different organisations both in the public and private sector. Anna currently works at Bailey & French, a Brighton-based positive psychology consultancy whose wellbeing and performance workshops impact people in organisations as diverse as Nando’s, the World Health Organisation and the UK Civil Service.

China Bears

+ CIEL + Murmur

China Bears were formed in Somerset in 2015 by twin brothers Ivan (guitar /vox) and Frazer (guitar). The line-up was completed after meeting bassist James and drummer Dean at university in Guildford later that year.

Perhaps unsurprisingly drawing influence from bands such as The National, Dry The River, Frightened Rabbit and Snow Patrol, China Bears create misery-strewn indie anthems combining ambient guitars, choral vocals and raw lyric writing. The end result is a fantastically precise sound which takes the original emo loud / quiet template of, say, Death Cab For Cutie, but adds a stadium-sized sonic sucker punch. All of which is evinced by their forthcoming debut EP out on August 9th via Fierce Panda records.

CIEL
Escaping from a small town in The Netherlands, dream pop artist CIEL moved to Brighton mid-2018. Living in the city’s creative community, frontwoman Michelle Hindriks found a surge of inspiration and soon formed a band with her new, like-minded friends – turning her solo act into a band project for the first time. With the move abroad also came a change in sound. Where back in The Netherlands Hindriks’ music was inspired by her being stuck in a dark period and feeling like she didn’t fit in, Brighton made her open up and this personal transition can be heard in the music CIEL has created since. CIEL’s latest work sees a set of nostalgic pop songs, consisting of retro sounding synths and chorus-y reverbed guitars laced with whispered vocal melodies.

Murmur
Murmur are an alt grunge band born in East Staffordshire, currently based in Brighton. Murmur produce playful yet dark themes, providing a backdrop for their socially conscious lyrics.

Black Monsoon

+ Gutterflower

Dutch grunge rockers Black Monsoon will be kicking off their 2019 UK tour at The Latest. Jamming
into the dark loudly, that’s songwriting for Black Monsoon. Melancholic vocals over gritty guitars and
raw drums, experimental noise rock and grunge from the basement. That’s how trio Black Monsoon
bring their impetuous grunge in full-noise live shows to the stages. These DIY girls and boy -Jacky
(guitars, vocals), Marjolijn (drums, keys) and Teun (guitars, vocals)- share their inspiration from raw
indie rock styles that derive from the times of Sonic Youth, and early Pixies and PJ Harvey.
After having played dozens of venues across The Netherlands in 2017-2018 and having released their
debut EP in 2018, the up and coming trio now have started crossing the Dutch borders by setting foot
to Germany and England, while stretching the boundaries of their musical experimentations. The
band has supported artists as The Fresh & Only’s, Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, and Dave Nance
Group during their Dutch club tours.

GUTTERFLOWER
“Tea total, south coastal, baby faced, freshly shaved, obnoxious, ‘grunge’ rock rip-offs”
Forming in 2015 Brighton-based grunge rockers Gutterflower swiftly pulled influences from early
alternative acts like Mudhoney, Nirvana and the Pixies; creating a wild and furious blend of delicate
arrangements mixed with a refreshing sense of simplicity that accompanies the grit of the grunge
era.

Hayley Ross

+ bessi

Hayley Ross lives by the sea in Brighton, grew up in Walton-on-Thames, has spent time in the Caribbean, and is right now renovating a fishing trawler to live on in Newhaven. Fascinated by water, as a child she dreamed of being a mermaid, and there’s a distinctive watery theme running through her debut album, The Weight Of Hope – notably on tracks like Barracuda and Lay Me Down. And tracing recurring themes is just one of the many pleasures of immersing yourself in this evocative, allusive work.

Debut album ‘The Weight Of Hope’ out 28th February 2020, mixed by John (Stone Roses) Leckie, and mastered at Abbey Road studios.

That’s right! We want you to join us on set and take a peak behind the scenes, if you’re lucky you might get chosen for a cameo. Who knows, it could even make you a star!… It’s true what they say, some people really would kill to be famous…

The show is mainly scripted and it features some brilliant improvisation and hilarious audience interaction.
