Benoit Viellefon – Hot Club Jazz at the Brunswick Theatre

Benoit Viellefon is coming to play a one off event at the Brunswick theatre, Brighton-Hove on Wednesday 29th November.

The Hot Club will play a mix of 1920-30-40’s music and will feature world class pianist Alex Bryson and Brighton based guitarist Jarrod Elks.

There are only 70 tickets available with some seating available on a first arrived first served basis.

Doors will open at 19:00, and the band will play at about 19:45.

ABOUT THE BENOIT HOT CLUB

Benoit Viellefon has long been a firm favourite at the most elegant places around the country. The line up and orchestrations are inspired
by the hot swinging music that emerged from the infamous Parisian Cafes and nightclubs of the 1930s & ‘40s.

The Hot Club’s performances celebrates the burning excitement of those hot gypsy swing  numbers made famous by Django Reinhardt, together with the romanticism of the finest French numbers. With a nod to the American jazz virtuosi who visited Paris, such as Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, the Hot Club features both clarinet and trumpet alongside the timeless two-guitars and double bass lineup. But they are also often true to the original “Hot Quintet De France” Django Reinhardt & Grapelli line up, with the addition of a virtuoso Violin player.

The Hot Club is resident at Ronnie Scotts and performs the best of gypsy swing, hot jazz, French music and timeless melodies from the 1920s, 30’s and 40s.  They have been in huge demand for major cultural events and concert hall performances including: headline slots at Glastonbury’s Jazz Stage, BBC2, BBC Radio3, Hollywood films, National Television, regular appearances at Ronnie Scotts, the Royal Albert Hall, Madonna’s private parties, Royal Family private events and a host of European performances.

Benoit’s concerts are infamous for selling out very fast. Please get yourself a ticket while you can!

RUTHIE COLLINS AND MATT HODGES GIG – 18TH OCTOBER 2023

The exceptionally talented Nashville based country singer and songwriter Ruthie Collins graces Hove with her presence on October 18th at The Brunswick. She’s touring with Matt Hodges, a singer songwriter from Wakefield who has been performing for over 10 years, his songs frequently hitting the number 1 spot on the iTunes country charts.

Ruthie started her music career in 2007 when she formed the country duo Wild Honey with Victoria Gordon. In 2011 she signed with Curb Records and released her debut self-titled EP in 2014. In 2016 she released her first album Get Drunk and Cry along with a short film. Most recently, she has released and album titled Cold Comfort, and toured it in 2021. The expanded version of the album, Cold Comfort +, was released last year.

Raised on a farm in Fredonia, New York, Ruthie blends the vulnerable, the volatile, and the serene in her music. Her songs fuse Americana, Bluegrass, and modern Country with vocals in the style of her icons Patty Griffin and Emmylou Harris. Her music features some upright bass and traditional bluegrass instrumentation in a style that’s both old-fashioned and very modern.

This is a special chance to see two very talented artists, so book your tickets soon.

NORMAN COOKs appearance will mark 25 years since the release of his highly successful album under the name of Fatboy Slim, You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby. Released in the autumn of 1998, its singles, which reached the top 10, included Praise You, Right Here, Right Now and The Rockerfeller Skank. Before becoming a superstar DJ and among dance music’s biggest figures, a remixer and a producer, he was a member of The Housemartins, who had a string of hits from the mid eighties. With Beats International, Norman was behind the single Dub Be Good to Me, which spent four weeks at number one in 1990. As a DJ, he is in huge demand around the world, including at big festivals and shows of varying sizes.

NICK BANKS has been a member of the renowned band Pulp since the mid eighties as their drummer. Fronted by Jarvis Cocker and known for songs such as Common People, Disco 2000 and Do You Remember the First Time, they reformed for a series of live shows during this summer. In 1995, at the height of Britpop, which Pulp were associated with, their album Different Class topped the chart and won the Mercury Music Prize a year later. 14th April – The Clause

The Clause

Doors 7.30pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

The Clause are a four-piece from Birmingham who bring together the swagger of the 60s, the rolling groove of the 80s and the riotous verve and attitude of the 90s. Pearce Macca (front man), Niall Fennell (drummer) Jonny Fyffe (bassist) and Liam Deakin (guitarist) effortlessly combine huge hooks with gritty verses, indie sensibilities and rhythm and blues groove and melodies to create an altogether different beast.

The music defies categorisation, rolling seamlessly from crashing percussion to huge, swinging bass. There are epic singalong choruses destined for stadiums and packed festival main stages, and darker, edgier moments evoking late night cruises down dingy back streets. The band have been together since they were kids and they have matured into one of the UK’s most exciting new bands. They have hit the road throughout the autumn and winter of 2022 supporting The Reytons, on their sold-out nationwide tour, following main support slots for the Pigeon Detectives, DMAs, The Enemy and The Snuts. The band completed a 16 date solo national tour in March 2022 and then embarked on a series of gigs to finish the year with a seven date solo tour culminating in a sold out 1300 capacity home town gig in Brum at the O2 Institute in late December. The live work now continues with a tour of major cities in spring 2023 including London, Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester.

QUENTIN CRISP: NAKED HOPE

Doors 8pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

From a conventional upbringing to global notoriety via The Naked Civil Servant, Quentin Crisp was one of the most memorable figures of the twentieth century. Openly gay as early as the 1930s, Quentin spent decades being beaten up on London’s streets for his refusal to be anything less than himself. His courage, and the philosophy that evolved from those experiences, inspire to the present day.
Naked Hope depicts Quentin at two phases of his extraordinary life: alone in his Chelsea flat in the 1960s, certain that life has passed him by, and thirty years later, giving a performance of his one man show An Evening with Quentin Crisp in New York.
Packed with witty gems on everything from cleaning (“Don’t bother – after the first four years the dirt won’t get any worse”) to marriage (“Is there life after marriage? The answer is no”), Naked Hope is a glorious, uplifting celebration of the urgent necessity to be your true self.

Running time: 75 mins no interval

Written and performed by Mark Farrelly.
Directed by Linda Marlowe.

★★★★ Time Out “An uncanny feat of resurrection. Farrelly’s mastery of his audience is total”
★★★★ Metro
“Wonderful. Mark Farrelly channels Quentin Crisp brilliantly. It’s important to keep his voice alive!” Boy George

20th October – Catalyst Club

Punk, Porn and Performance in 70s Secret London with Cathi Unsworth and Dorothy Max Prior

Doors 7.30pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

Cathi Unsworth and Dorothy Max Prior are the authors of two brand new books exploring the Seventies counterculture of Punk, queerdom, art, music and fashion.
Cathi’s new book, Defying Gravity, the life and times of the late punk icon Jordan Mooney, celebrates the extraordinary life of one of the most iconic people of the 70s and reveals how a ballet-mad girl from Sussex make her way, via the clandestine gay clubs of Brighton and London, to the eye of punk’s storm, sharing hair-raising adventures with the Sex Pistols, Adam and his Ants, Derek Jarman and Andy Warhol.

Max’s 69 Exhibition Road: Twelve True-Life Tales from the Fag End of Punk, Porn & Performance today is a vibrant, wry, and engaging account of life as an adventurous, queer young person in late 1970s London discovering themselves as an artist, and an individual. While working as a photographer’s model, gallery usher, and exotic dancer, Max witnessed the births of Adam and the Ants, The Sex Pistols, and Throbbing Gristle, as well as drumming in her own cult band and recording with Industrial Records.
Mixing readings with slide show-style talks Cathi and Max take us through the multilayered nature of the London music, art, and fashion worlds of the late 1970s, and the overlap between the early punk scene with the city’s rapidly evolving club and queer cultures.

‘Jordan was the original Sex Pistol.’ Derek Jarman

19th September – Wyldest

Wlydest

Doors 7pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

The musical evolution of Zoe Mead, aka Wyldest, has been a slow but steady one – a mix of deliberate exploration, a natural shifting in taste, and a certain virus twisting her arm. After recording drums for 20 songs touted for her second album – Monthly Friend – last February, the impending lockdown then took studio time off the table.

Plus Jemima Coulter

Jemima Coulter’s music exists in an impressionistic reverie, somewhere between a hallucination and the waking world. Populated bystories of body-swapping and clowns, Coulter’s music takes us beyond the personal, traveling from London to Perugia, to the circus and the sea. But for Coulter, stories aren’t simply an escape route, away out of a painful reality; instead they offer a resting place for the weary traveler—a glimpse of real magic in a portrait of the surreal.
