7th March – Action for Happiness

Action for Happiness

Doors 6.45pm // Latest Music Bar // Free Entry

Self-described as a “movement for positive social change”, Action for Happiness is a national charity aimed at increasing basic levels of happiness through whatever means they have and is a long-term friend of Latest Music Bar. Here’s what they have to say about their mission….

We’re bringing together people from all walks of life who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone. For fifty years we’ve aimed relentlessly at higher incomes. But despite being much wealthier, we’re no happier than we were five decades ago. At the same time we’ve seen an increase in wider social issues, including a worrying rise in anxiety and depression in young people. It’s time for a positive change in what we mean by progress.

4th June – Can I Be Bored Now? – Fringe

Can I Be Bored Now?

Doors 7.30pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

Pebble Trust and Bird&BlendTeaCo bursary winning play ‘Can I Be Bored Now? is a theatre piece in which through dialogues, music and movement, two performers lead the audience on a journey using a visual art installation with projected drawings on a screen.
The aim is to bombard the spectators with multiple information, displayed in a similar way that social media platforms incessantly convey endless (un)related posts and news. The unease around it brings queries and doubts about every day decision making regarding covering boredom with social media. What happens when we put ourselves in the virtual world of social media? Are we seeking to escape from boredom or reality?
Should we keep surrendering ourselves to the screen, embracing alienation. Lack of passion, or better said, lack of necessity to be productive. States of energy and creativity compensated with states of depression, fear and anxiety. Overwhelming feeling of being less worthy, intensified need to feel special, every single day. Constant need to be entertained while losing the ability to focus. Can we be bored again?

2nd June – Bovine Cemetery’s World War III Literary Cabaret – Fringe

Bovine Cemetery’s World War III Literary Cabaret

Doors 7.30pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

…and we’re gonna party like it’s 1939!

Willkommen, Bienvenue and welcome to the literary event to end all literary events, and everything else!

On 2 June, fiction fanatacists Bovine Cemetery will be showcasing ten of Brighton’s best and boldest emerging writers, all musing and amusing on the crazy death spiral that is the modern world. Expect risqué regrets and laughable lamentations, all passionately delivered from Latest Music Bar’s colourful cabaret bunker.

Ten writers, ten stories, and a jolly nice night of glitterature before we all explode in a fiery ball of flames. Sounds good, ja?

Cabaret dress is very much encouraged, so dust off that top hat, shake off that underlying feeling of constant dread, and join us on 2 June for a fabulously fun farewell to everything.

Doors 19:30 for a 20:00 start.

Original fiction performed live, and everyone’s invited.

2nd June – Queen Mab: The Witching Hour – Fringe

Queen Mab: The Witching Hour

Doors 5.30pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

Welcome to the Court of Queen Mab: The witching hour has descended, ushering in a phantasmagorical feast for the senses as this musical monarch takes to the stage…

The alter-ego of multi-award-winning theatre-maker, songwriter, and cabaret performer Hattie Snooks, Queen Mab was birthed in the spring of 2020 when, in the midst of the pandemic, she reconnected with longtime friend and top producer Ashley Slater (Freak Power, Kitten & the Hip). Just over one year later, Give the Bliss was released – a natty little album full of brass, bass, and sultry sparkle! Now, Mab takes to the stage for her hotly anticipated Fringe debut.

Queen Mab is irreverent yet commanding, escapist, ethereal, alluring, slightly unhinged… Fun, but with an undeniable darker streak. She conjures a heady witches’ brew of wildly eclectic influences – a pinch of trip-hop here, a dash of breakbeat there, a healthy dollop of funk, a drizzle of folk, and lashings of R&B, soul, and jazz. Ostensibly, it’s theatrical art-pop that ran away with the circus and woke up in a field somewhere… And with its sense of dramatic flair, witty lyricism, musical kudos, and banging beats, it may also prove to be the stuff of legend.

Praise for other work:

“Witty, clever, sharp…” ★★★★ (The Reviews Hub)
“Loud and proud” ★★★★ (Broadway Baby)
“An absolute treat” ★★★★ (Clownster.co.uk)

… I need you flying …

2023 welcomes the return of David Klowie with new show ‘Time, Machine.’ : a fantastic voyage through time and space, exploring what it means to be human in a changing world.

A storyteller at heart, Klowie blends nostalgia and modernity, unveiling messages found within David Bowie’s wide-ranging repertoire to shine a spotlight on the socio-political climate of today.

Singing live against a film backdrop, with curiosity, sensitivity and emotive theatricality, David Klowie boldly holds a mirror up to reality, questioning what society, and humanity, have become, as he invites us to contemplate our role on this planet …

Do we need a saviour? Is it too late? Is this all we’ve got?

… Or do we dare to dream up a better future? …

As seen at : King of the Fringe, Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Kingdom, and Brighton Big Drag Pageant
David Klowie is a creation of Brighton-based performance artist KittCH

Funny, absorbing unpredictable, and ultimately heart-warming, this play will give you a lot to talk about.

Oliver and Isabel, middle-aged and middle-class, must host the perfect dinner tonight as the guest of honour is Oliver’s boss, and Oliver’s promotion depends on the success of this evening. Surely nothing can upset their plans?
Except… possibly… the clash of their personalities, her ambition, his ineptitude, mutual jealousies, the strain of holding a marriage together and keeping up appearances, the shattered dreams, and the general lack of poetry in modern life, all explored hilariously in this fast-paced roller coaster of a comedy.

Doors 7.30pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

1966. Patrick McGoohan, the world’s highest-paid actor, having already turned down James Bond, walks out of his hit series Danger Man for a new project that seems to encapsulate all the paranoia, intrigue and psychedelic insanity of the swinging sixties. Backing him is Lew Grade, Britain’s leading impresario, head of a legendary entertainment dynasty. Together they make The Prisoner, a cult TV masterpiece – the most written-about TV series of all time. But, through all the tensions, strains, triumphs and controversies, there’s one question that remains: “Who is No. 1?”

The latest comedy play from the multi-award-winning writing duo Brian Mitchell (co-writer of The Ministry of Biscuits) and Joseph Nixon (co-writer of West-End hit The Shark Is Broken), explores the age-old tensions between artist and patron, prophet and king, telling the truth and pleasing the crowd, and why artists sometimes risk everything for their vision.

Performed by a cast of Brighton’s finest, including previous festival award-winners Ross Gurney-Randall (Big Daddy Vs. Giant Haystacks, Follow Me) and Robert Cohen (The Trials of Harvey Matusow, High Vis) in a special preview presentation from the Foundry Group, winners of OffWestEnd.com’s OffFEST Award for Theatre, Brighton Fringe 2022.

Running Time: 90 minutes including 15 min interval

14th April – The Clause

The Clause

Doors 7.30pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

The Clause are a four-piece from Birmingham who bring together the swagger of the 60s, the rolling groove of the 80s and the riotous verve and attitude of the 90s. Pearce Macca (front man), Niall Fennell (drummer) Jonny Fyffe (bassist) and Liam Deakin (guitarist) effortlessly combine huge hooks with gritty verses, indie sensibilities and rhythm and blues groove and melodies to create an altogether different beast.

The music defies categorisation, rolling seamlessly from crashing percussion to huge, swinging bass. There are epic singalong choruses destined for stadiums and packed festival main stages, and darker, edgier moments evoking late night cruises down dingy back streets. The band have been together since they were kids and they have matured into one of the UK’s most exciting new bands. They have hit the road throughout the autumn and winter of 2022 supporting The Reytons, on their sold-out nationwide tour, following main support slots for the Pigeon Detectives, DMAs, The Enemy and The Snuts. The band completed a 16 date solo national tour in March 2022 and then embarked on a series of gigs to finish the year with a seven date solo tour culminating in a sold out 1300 capacity home town gig in Brum at the O2 Institute in late December. 5th April – Catalyst Club Special: THE SILENCE OF SNOW: THE LIFE OF PATRICK HAMILTON

Catalyst Club Special: THE SILENCE OF SNOW: THE LIFE OF PATRICK HAMILTON

Doors 8pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

Mark Farrelly (Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope) presents his riveting, kinetic solo show portraying one of the great English writers of the inter-war years. Brighton author Patrick Hamilton was a dazzling success in his twenties, producing hit plays Rope (filmed by Hitchcock) and Gaslight, and classic novels Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky, Hangover Square and The Slaves of Solitude.
But Hamilton was also an alcoholic, whose wit became increasingly mordant as his inner and outer worlds collapsed. Covering the entire sweep of Hamilton’s turbulent life and writing, The Silence of Snow entertains and challenges in equal measure, asking audiences: why do so many of us get through life without feeling we ever truly knew another person?
This witty and engaging tribute to a great English writer is written and performed by Mark Farrelly, whose West End credits include Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? opposite Matthew Kelly. He is directed by EastEnders star Linda Marlowe.

Running time: 70 mins no interval

★★★★ “You won’t be able to take your eyes off this magnetic actor Mark Farrelly. He inhabits the character of Hamilton with a blazing fluidity”
The Times

★★★★ “Horrifyingly funny snapshot of the wit, novelist and playwright…brilliant” The Spectator

★★★★ “Farrelly’s revelatory autopsy of a cauterised heart of darkness is intimidatingly implosive: stand well close” The Reviews Hub

SOCK + Gramski + Noah Sumptions

Doors 8pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

Tickets £10 advance.
£12 on the door.

SOCK

Sock were formed in a small town in 1990, always unpredictable and flamboyant, they reigned supreme for two years before dispersing to the four corners of the world to pursue their individual dreams. After 22 years the band reformed for a one off gig that coincided with singer Guy adopting the on-stage persona of glam rock-god Vince Venus and gaining international fame as the (unofficial) winner of Britain’s Got Talent in 2015. The rest of the band followed suit and have emerged as a group of misfit superheroes on a mission to save rock n’ roll.

Gramski

Gramski is an award winning master in the art of freestyle rap. He’s rapped everywhere from Glastonbury festival, the jungles of Panama, the Hadron Super Collider, Vietnamese nightclubs and now joins us at The Latest Music Bar. Come prepared with imaginative ideas and he’ll turn them into rap tracks for you without hesitation.

Noah Sumptions

A regular on the Brighton poetry scene, Noah Sumptions has grown from tragic teenage bedroom playwright to performing a feature set to an audience of thousands at Brighton TransPride 2022. Once lovingly told they “took the age old art of poetry and shat all over it”, Noah is here, unapologetically queer, and resolutely unafraid to dive deep into the awkward, unbearable and unspeakable parts of the human condition. Better out than in, as they say.
