June 2nd – Tiberius and Azure at The Latest Bar, Brighton

Tiberius and Azure at The Latest Bar, Brighton

Doors 7pm // Latest MusicBar // 18+ // Get Tickets Here

Awarded “Best Metal Act” in 2017 by the Scottish Alternative Music Awards, Tiberius have been quickly establishing themselves as a popular alternative to what is expected from the metal genre. Writing tongue-in-cheek songs that shed light on global and personal struggles, the band have carved out a niche position for themselves which emphasizes the personalities of the men behind the music and has seen them support heavyweights such as The Contortionist and Twelve Foot Ninja, as well as securing a main stage slot at UK Tech Fest.

Beginning their musical venture with a style which incorporated the rhythmic and melodic motifs typical of the djent and tech metal genres, the musical direction of Tiberius has evolved since their eponymous debut EP in 2015 to reflect the ambition and maturity of five individuals who seek to continually challenge themselves (and each other) writing music that they love, about topics of which they are passionate. Their sound development has culminated with the debut album, A Peaceful Annihilation released in June 2020, which has quickly garnered numerous positive reviews and solidified Tiberius as a prog metal mainstay. Tiberius have various festival bookings in 2022, including a return to UK Tech Fest and their debut at the rapidly growing RADAR festival.

They will be joined by Brighton’s Azure.

May 24th – Peanut Factory Book Launch

The Peanut Factory Book Launch with Author Deborah Price

7pm-9pm // Latest MusicBar // Tickets coming soon

Photo: Lizzie Barrington

On May 24th, Latest MusicBar is proud to be hosting the launch of Deborah Prices most recent book; Peanut Factory – A memoir, published by Guts Publishing. Join us for a night with the author, and read the bio for the book below.

A young woman and her friends squat in abandoned houses in London in the late 70s during the emerging counterculture scene.

Set in South London (Crystal Palace), Deborah mingled with some of the biggest names to emerge from the scene. She booked The Damned’s first show, served pints to Johnny Rotten, and attended a backyard gig from King Kurt.

Squat life was sex, drugs and punk rock but it wasn’t all fun and games. The Peanut Factory shows Deborah navigating a male-dominated scene, moving every few months and living with drug dealers, sex workers, people on the run and working-class kids like her.

Despite the chaos, the squatters were a family. They were kids creating their own rules. Making art. Living life on the fly. The Peanut Factory is an ode to the youthful rebellion of the 1970s and to London itself.

May 3rd – Action for Happiness

Action for Happiness

Free Entry // 6:45pm Doors

Self-described as a “movement for positive social change”, Action for Happiness is a national charity aimed at increasing basic levels of happiness through whatever means they have and is a long-term friend of Latest Music Bar. Here’s what they have to say about their mission….

We’re bringing together people from all walks of life who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone. For fifty years we’ve aimed relentlessly at higher incomes. But despite being much wealthier, we’re no happier than we were five decades ago. At the same time we’ve seen an increase in wider social issues, including a worrying rise in anxiety and depression in young people. It’s time for a positive change in what we mean by progress.

May 2nd – Brighton Groove Project

Brighton Groove Project – The Acid Jazz and Funk Jam Returns!

The music is improvised around a riff or simple chord progression, with the groove as the guide. Occasionally we might slip into tunes like Cantaloupe Island, Maiden Voyage or Chameleon.
Someone calls a key and starts a riff and everyone brings their sound to the mix. It’s a great opportunity to stretch out, work on your improvising or just dance to the funky grooves. Everyone is welcome, percussionists, horn players, vocalists, rappers, didgeridoo and harmonica players too.
As with most jams, amps, keyboards and drums are provided, please treat them with respect. Guitarists, bassists, horn players etc please bring your own instruments. Please arrive in good time so we can get you up to do 1 or 2 numbers.
If you want some clues about the kind of stuff we do, check out bands like The Brand New Heavies, Down to the Bone, Jamiroquai, Incognito, Herbie Hancocks Headhunters and John Scofields Uberjam as well as the demo on the BGP page. http://soundcloud.com/brighton-groove-project/short-demo

Entry is free and there will be an opportunity to donate to the house bands during the night.

Queer Contemporaries
Out of competition special programme

Although Queer Animation is a relatively young genre, there have been an array of ground breaking films by a new generation of filmmakers that have arisen in the last few years. From gender identity in Purpleboy and Cut through to early internet chat room culture in Guy 101, these films all explore a unique perspective on queer culture and queer identity. Some utilise humour and imagination, some are factual accounts of lived experiences. From all across the globe such as Hungary, Canada and Isreal and through stop motion, hand drawn or pixilation, the one thing these films have in common is an engaging account of the queer human experience.

Sound and Vision and Q+A
“Don’t you sometimes wonder about sound and vision?” sang David Bowie. Yes we do Bowie! This collection showcases films that showcase a strong relationship between audio and visuals – whether it be music video, choreography, abstract visuals or more humour based pieces. Don’t expect a beginning, a middle and an end with these films, this is more of a wild ride of styles and form from figurative character based animation through to non narrative abstract.

The former journalist made a name for herself in the electronic music scene, with her experimental sound collages, confrontational texts and unique way of performing live solo. Her breakthrough came in 2010 with the release of the cult-hit, experimental LP, ‚Anika‘ (Stones Throw /Invada), which she recorded with Geoff Barrow and band Beak> in Bristol, a wholey unexpected and unplanned affair, which began Anika’s long and winding road into the music, film, poetry and arts scenes. Her most known song remains ‚I Go To Sleep‘, a cover of ‚The Kinks‘ 1965 classic.

April 4th – Brighton Groove Project

Brightons Acid Jazz and Funk Jam Returns!
