15th April – Brighton International Animation Festival

Brighton International Animation Festival

Doors 10.30am // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

Brighton International Animation Festival is set to take place at Latest Music Bar on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th April.  Taking place for the second year running, the festival is a fantastic celebration of iconic animation and showcases the best in the next generation of filmmakers – UK and International. As well as an impressive programme, this year the festival will include an exciting AR exhibit and the One Bum Cinema Club will be making an appearance. All films are subtitled with BSL interpreters at all events, making it fully accessible for deaf & hard of hearing.

2023 judge’s prestige panel includes Emmy and Oscar-nominated director Joanna Quinn, who will also be hosting her first UK retrospective at the festival for the first time in years. Barry Purves – whose work ranges from the stop motion 80s Wind in the Willows to feature films like Mars Attacks! And King Kong – will be giving a masterclass on the Sunday, and Hannah Lau Walker – a pioneer of women in the animation industry.

You can book tickets online now for the jam-packed two-day programme, including:

To Be Human – focusing on the human condition. Living with Alzheimer’s, child soldiers, body image and men’s knitting groups are just some of the topics explored in this collection of films from countries including Australia, Egypt through to UK.

The (un)Natural World – Science, the environment and creatures of the earth are the focus of this programme. Expect sea creatures, insect specialists and hot-blooded flowers in the programme from countries including Taiwan, Iran and Sri Lanka.

Wild Characters – Use of personification and exaggeration are some of the joys of designing and working with character within animation. Clocks, clowns, huge sausage dogs and Elton John all feature in this collection of films that all have a character-based focus.

This festival is also one of firsts, featuring Queer As F**K: a special curated programme of Queer Animation not seen in other animation festivals, that explores an array of contemporary queer culture from terfs and gender identity to sex positivity. BIAF will also feature No Planet B – an Augmented Reality exhibition which will be on site to explore between the schedules.

14th April – The Clause

The Clause

Doors 7.30pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

The Clause are a four-piece from Birmingham who bring together the swagger of the 60s, the rolling groove of the 80s and the riotous verve and attitude of the 90s. Pearce Macca (front man), Niall Fennell (drummer) Jonny Fyffe (bassist) and Liam Deakin (guitarist) effortlessly combine huge hooks with gritty verses, indie sensibilities and rhythm and blues groove and melodies to create an altogether different beast.

The music defies categorisation, rolling seamlessly from crashing percussion to huge, swinging bass. There are epic singalong choruses destined for stadiums and packed festival main stages, and darker, edgier moments evoking late night cruises down dingy back streets. The band have been together since they were kids and they have matured into one of the UK’s most exciting new bands. They have hit the road throughout the autumn and winter of 2022 supporting The Reytons, on their sold-out nationwide tour, following main support slots for the Pigeon Detectives, DMAs, The Enemy and The Snuts. The band completed a 16 date solo national tour in March 2022 and then embarked on a series of gigs to finish the year with a seven date solo tour culminating in a sold out 1300 capacity home town gig in Brum at the O2 Institute in late December. The live work now continues with a tour of major cities in spring 2023 including London, Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester.

5th April – Catalyst Club Special: THE SILENCE OF SNOW: THE LIFE OF PATRICK HAMILTON

Catalyst Club Special: THE SILENCE OF SNOW: THE LIFE OF PATRICK HAMILTON

Doors 8pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

Mark Farrelly (Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope) presents his riveting, kinetic solo show portraying one of the great English writers of the inter-war years. Brighton author Patrick Hamilton was a dazzling success in his twenties, producing hit plays Rope (filmed by Hitchcock) and Gaslight, and classic novels Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky, Hangover Square and The Slaves of Solitude.
But Hamilton was also an alcoholic, whose wit became increasingly mordant as his inner and outer worlds collapsed. Covering the entire sweep of Hamilton’s turbulent life and writing, The Silence of Snow entertains and challenges in equal measure, asking audiences: why do so many of us get through life without feeling we ever truly knew another person?
This witty and engaging tribute to a great English writer is written and performed by Mark Farrelly, whose West End credits include Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? opposite Matthew Kelly. He is directed by EastEnders star Linda Marlowe.

Running time: 70 mins no interval

★★★★ “You won’t be able to take your eyes off this magnetic actor Mark Farrelly. He inhabits the character of Hamilton with a blazing fluidity”
The Times

★★★★ “Horrifyingly funny snapshot of the wit, novelist and playwright…brilliant” The Spectator

★★★★ “Farrelly’s revelatory autopsy of a cauterised heart of darkness is intimidatingly implosive: stand well close” The Reviews Hub

1st April – SOCK

SOCK + Gramski + Noah Sumptions

Doors 8pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

Tickets £10 advance.
£12 on the door.

SOCK

Sock were formed in a small town in 1990, always unpredictable and flamboyant, they reigned supreme for two years before dispersing to the four corners of the world to pursue their individual dreams. After 22 years the band reformed for a one off gig that coincided with singer Guy adopting the on-stage persona of glam rock-god Vince Venus and gaining international fame as the (unofficial) winner of Britain’s Got Talent in 2015. The rest of the band followed suit and have emerged as a group of misfit superheroes on a mission to save rock n’ roll.

Gramski

Gramski is an award winning master in the art of freestyle rap. He’s rapped everywhere from Glastonbury festival, the jungles of Panama, the Hadron Super Collider, Vietnamese nightclubs and now joins us at The Latest Music Bar. Come prepared with imaginative ideas and he’ll turn them into rap tracks for you without hesitation.

Noah Sumptions

A regular on the Brighton poetry scene, Noah Sumptions has grown from tragic teenage bedroom playwright to performing a feature set to an audience of thousands at Brighton TransPride 2022. Once lovingly told they “took the age old art of poetry and shat all over it”, Noah is here, unapologetically queer, and resolutely unafraid to dive deep into the awkward, unbearable and unspeakable parts of the human condition. Better out than in, as they say.

‘Holy popes’—the irony of giving godly importance to man made ideas. Systems of oppression created to make us subservient to religion, to capitalism, to patriarchy. 11th March – Grade 2

Grade 2 + Clobber + Rats Nest

7.30pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

50 years after the genre turned the music world upside-down, Grade 2 bring the raw power of old school punk to a new generation. Their second release on TimArmstrong’s legendary Hellcat Records is a thumping 15 track tour de force melding the uncompromising ethos of punk with the howl of contemporary injustice, personal identity and frustrations of Gen-Z youth, authentically told by three lads with punk coursing through their veins.

Formed on their native Isle of Wight when they were just 14 years old, Jack Chatfield (guitar & vocals), Jacob Hull (drums) and Sid Ryan (bass & vocals) honed their craft covering punk pioneers before creating a sound uniquely theirs: ten years on, the eponymous ‘Grade 2’ is their magnus opus. From the complex rhythms and brutal two-note guitar of opening track ‘Judgement Day’, the record grabs by the scruff of the neck and never lets up. With a commitment to the cause, lead single ‘DoingTime’ is a thunderous hardcore punk track screaming “Spoon feed me corporate lies;I left that place with a noose to my neck.” Intertwined are upbeat bangers (‘Under theStreetlight’, ‘Celine’), classic pop-punk (‘Don’t Stand Alone’, ‘Fast Pace’), and savage old-school grit (‘Parasite’, ‘Gaslight’). The result is a bone-crunching 35-minutes that agitates, intoxicates and liberates in equal measure.

“Like everyone else, 2020 left us proper fucked off,” says frontman Sid Ryan. “Yet we were able to channel every ounce of that despair into every second of this record.”

“Returning to Ship Rec Studio resparked that magic dynamic” says guitarist Jack Chatfield. “When we’re in there I feel like we reach our full potential. Tim would offer tweaks and tips for some songs, while others he’d compliment as finished first timewe played them.”

“We worked flat-out recording this record,” says drummer Jacob Hull, “but we neverfelt pressured, Tim keeping us in the zone to make the best tunes of our lives.”

Famed for blistering live performances and exceptional musicianship, the band haveconsolidated the essence of their live show in ‘Grade 2’. Tune in and turn up. Here’sa record to rattle your bones, stir your heart and have you singing till you’re hoarselike it’s the first day of punk.

Self-described as a “movement for positive social change”, Action for Happiness is a national charity aimed at increasing basic levels of happiness through whatever means they have and is a long-term friend of Latest Music Bar. Here’s what they have to say about their mission….

We’re bringing together people from all walks of life who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone. For fifty years we’ve aimed relentlessly at higher incomes. But despite being much wealthier, we’re no happier than we were five decades ago. At the same time we’ve seen an increase in wider social issues, including a worrying rise in anxiety and depression in young people. It’s time for a positive change in what we mean by progress.

8pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

Leningrad 1946, the Cold War:
All culture in the USSR is subject to the brutal control of a totalitarian state censor. But music-mad bootleggers devise an incredible and risky way to listen to and share the music they love, copying forbidden songs onto used X-ray film and creating their own records..

Stephen Coates tells the secret history of these ‘Bone’ bootlegs of forbidden music cut onto x-ray  – and of the people who made, played and paid for them.

Who were they? Why did they do it and how was it even possible? Based on years of interviews and oral testimonies, Stephen; new book BONE MUSIC contains an expanded detailed history of the culture of the Soviet X-Ray Underground, with testimonies from actual bootleggers and buyers, a whole section on the x-ray culture of Budapest and  detailed study  of the technical means of making bone records.

“Stephen Coates – strangely, an Englishman – knows more technical and biographical details of the Bone Records story than anyone else.”  – Artemyi Troitsky
