South African Jazz Legend, Producer, Composer, Multi Instrumentalist prepares for his UK Tour to Celebrate His 50th Anniversary in Music – Music industry icon Don Laka will be continuing his Golden Jubilee celebrations with a UK tour that will see him bring his acclaimed live show to a series of venues across the country.

Don Laka’s UK Tour follows on from his recent Don Laka and Friends 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert in which the Kwaai Jazz mastero teamed up with legendary artists such as Sipho (Hotstix) Mabuse, Jimmy Dludlu, Nigerai’s Kunle Oditao and Ayo Solanke, and eWatini’s Gcobane Masuku for a weekend of shows in South Africa State Theatre’s iconic Opera Theatre.

Like the Don Laka and Friends 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert, the artist’s UK tour will reflect on the Laka’s rich and varied musical journey that began in 1972, and has seen him release over 800 songs, with over 80 collaborations, many awards, and a Grammy nomination for his work with Hugh Maskela.

Laka has been an undeniable music history pioneer for his role in the development of not one but two South African musical styles – Kwaito (and its off shoot Afro-Pop) and Kwaai Jazz (and its off shoot Mapianos). For these, his 6 multi-plat albums, and more, he was awarded the South African Music Award’s most prestigious award – The Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.

Beyond his own artistic output, Don Laka has been a force for good in the music industry as a whole. In his early career, Laka was a teacher who helped to train many of the next generation to come, and founded the first successful black record company, Kalawa Jazzmee Records, in South Africa allowing artists to produce, record, and market their own music without help from any major label.

Don Laka’s UK Tour will see the artist bring his incredible musical repertoire back here with an unforgettable live show sure to stun audiences.

25th October – Sarah Klang plus special guests

FORM PRESENTS SARAH KLANG PLUS SPECIAL GUESTS

TICKETS : https://www.wegottickets.com/event/585898

£15 DOORS 7.30PM  SHOW STARTS 8PM

Sarah Klang has enjoyed plenty of success in her career to date, with three Top 5 albums in her homeland of Sweden, sold out headline tours, as well as winning at the Swedish Grammy awards twice.

Klang’s live shows are fun and exhilarating, moving and intimate –  simultaneously – which has earned her fans all over Europe. After a successful European run in 2022, she’s now announcing new shows for 2023 starting in Brighton, UK on October 25th.

Kicking off a string of new releases for this year is Klang’s latest single ”Mercedes”, a song written to her unborn daughter, just months after discovering she was pregnant. The lyrics assures her daughter that she will forever be there for her. “You can always run to me,” Klang sings on the soaring synth-driven track that radiates with hope and optimism for her daughter’s future.

Klang has always had a talent for autobiographical song writing, like on her acclaimed debut Love in The Milky Way (2018) which won Best Album at the Swedish Grammis awards. It continued on Creamy Blue (2019) her second album that earned another nomination for ‘Best Album’ and ‘Best Alternative Pop’ at the Grammis awards, and another nod for ‘European Album Of The Year’ at the IMPALA Awards.  While her sound had previously touched upon a mix of influences (‘60 and ‘70s pop, Americana, an undercurrent of country), 2021’s ‘VIRGO’ – her most well-received album to date – then broadened her scope to include elements of ‘80s synth-pop (again winning a Swedish Grammy for Best Alternative Pop). Tastemaker praise followed, notably from i-D, Rolling Stone and Clash.

Show starts 8.00pm

A highlight for PierFest 2023. A night to celebrate three decades of music by The Ukrainians. Expect an exciting set with the best songs from three decades of Eastern Folk Punk.
Using their British born Ukrainian roots, the band mix eastern and western culture – singing in Ukrainian, using eastern ethnic instruments, but backed up with a western rock rhythm.
After three decades of recording and touring, there are lots of milestones to highlight.

The Ukrainians were formed in 1991, the year Ukraine regained its independence from the Soviet Union. ‘Oi Divchino’ was the band’s first single, which became an NME Single of the Week, and the video for it was shot in Kyiv. It was the first pop video to be produced in the east for a western band.

Most recently, The Ukrainians have been involved in numerous benefit gigs to raise money for refugees from this terrible war. There will be an opportunity to support refugees at the gig both financially, and by cheering on the artist who support on the night.

You can expect to hear songs from each of The Ukrainians’ albums, and this is sure to be an eastern night to remember!

We’re bringing together people from all walks of life who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone. For fifty years we’ve aimed relentlessly at higher incomes. But despite being much wealthier, we’re no happier than we were five decades ago. At the same time we’ve seen an increase in wider social issues, including a worrying rise in anxiety and depression in young people. It’s time for a positive change in what we mean by progress.

RUTHIE COLLINS AND MATT HODGES GIG – 18TH OCTOBER 2023

The exceptionally talented Nashville based country singer and songwriter Ruthie Collins graces Hove with her presence on October 18th at The Brunswick. She’s touring with Matt Hodges, a singer songwriter from Wakefield who has been performing for over 10 years, his songs frequently hitting the number 1 spot on the iTunes country charts.

Ruthie started her music career in 2007 when she formed the country duo Wild Honey with Victoria Gordon. In 2011 she signed with Curb Records and released her debut self-titled EP in 2014. In 2016 she released her first album Get Drunk and Cry along with a short film. Most recently, she has released and album titled Cold Comfort, and toured it in 2021. The expanded version of the album, Cold Comfort +, was released last year.

Raised on a farm in Fredonia, New York, Ruthie blends the vulnerable, the volatile, and the serene in her music. Her songs fuse Americana, Bluegrass, and modern Country with vocals in the style of her icons Patty Griffin and Emmylou Harris. Her music features some upright bass and traditional bluegrass instrumentation in a style that’s both old-fashioned and very modern.

This is a special chance to see two very talented artists, so book your tickets soon.

FRANKIE KNIGHT – MUSIC REVIEW

Sanctuary of Sound
CHALK – Brighton
September 14th, 2023

Review by Jen Good

When the whimsically bodacious Frankie Knight graces the stage, barefoot with her ethereal presence, the aura of the whole room changes to a hypnotic dreamlike state that will float right through you. Frankie is a genuine artist and musical alchemist crafting wistful elixirs of electro trip-pop and trancey mystic vibes. Unconcerned with genres, Knight effortlessly fuses a concoction of disparate elements from sultry but pulsating beats to personal power ballads. Her performances transcend boundaries too, and are nothing short of transformative experiences. She played us some of her new material, opening with ‘Send it to the Moon’ from this year’s ‘Space Pop’, and even had us singing along in an audience participation song inspired by her Grandmother, which lavished us with layers of light. And although often compared to Morcheeba and Massive Attack, there’s a side-dish of Grimes in there, some Lana Del Rey and maybe even a second soundtrack to the film Drive.

Frankie’s stage presence is an enigma in the best possible way. She enters like a flowing ribbon of light, unassuming yet strangely hypnotic, and as the music washes over the room, she transforms into a more powerful goddess. Her genuine charisma draws you in, leaving you entranced and beckons you away to a more fantastical reality.  Her poignant storytelling feels like she’s channelling something innocent and pure, yet unapologetically profound. Her vocals are a revelation of a poet weaving a tapestry of emotion. With a voice that ranges from velvet-smooth to fiercely passionate, Frankie can morph her resonance to suit the essence and fluctuating range of each song.

It only makes sense that Frankie Knight was invited to open for British veterans to the electro scene – Kosheen, hailing from Bristol and fusing electro, D&B, trip-hop and pop elements since 1998. And we think she not only did them justice, but is a rising star to definitely keep your eye on! And not without the support of her dynamic drummer Rob, who compliments and completes the dynamic duo. They left us with the space-popping and drifty ‘Mystic’, a song Frankie wrote over lockdown about “the greedy politicians”.

Frankie Knight’s world is for those who crave connection, transcendence and a rare feeling of authenticity that runs deep. She is an enigmatic force of nature, and her artistry is a unique treasure waiting to leave you spellbound in a shared experience, so step right in and surrender.

Good Knight.

23 September – Americana Festival Day Shauna Parker Charlie Austen and Red River

Americana Festival Day

British Americana artists at PierFest 2023

Shauna Parker

Charlie Austen

Red River

At Horatio’s Bar on Brighton Palace Pier

Midday – 4pm

FREE ENTRY

SHAUNA PARKER

Shauna is best known as the singer in Shauna Parker and the Saloon Bar Band who play a great mix of classic country and contemporary Americana.

Brighton-based for many years now, she originally hails from Nova Scotia, Canada and grew up influenced by the best of Canadian musical heroes including Mitchell, Young, Lang, Cohen and McGarrigle. Combining a love of contemporary cutting-edge Americana and down-home Country classics ensures a wide ranging repertoire, whether solo, fronting The Saloon Bar Band, her Kitchen Party duo, or bringing Carole King’s ‘Tapestry’ or the songs of Patsy Cline to life.

Despite often saying that “with so many brilliant songs to sing, why would I want to write my own?” she is moving in a new direction, focusing on presenting her own songs, many of which are born of half a lifetime of separation from her family in Canada.
“Honest, timeless songs of love, temptation, heartache and loss – when Shauna sings you believe every word.”

CHARLIE AUSTEN

Supported by Charlie Austen
Charlie is a one-woman tour-de-force, playing carefully crafted original songs on the folk-soul-rock spectrum, ready to take you on a lyrical journey to outer-space and back. Airy, yet powerful blues-infused vocals, intricate guitar parts and bare feet that keep the beat, courtesy of her unique suitcase drum-kit invention. Recently featured nationally on BBC Radio 4, and launching onto the UK festival circuit this year.

Charlie also features as a vocalist in cult blues-rock band Nine Below Zero, with whom she has toured extensively, and has been chosen for many high-profile gigs with her solo act. These include a European tour with Bryan Ferry, several UK tours with Squeeze-frontman and Ivor-Novello award winning songwriter Glenn Tilbrook, and a contribution to Cat Stevens’s online ‘Catsong’ festival, celebrating 50 years of ‘Tea for the Tillerman’.

RED RIVER

Red River are Brighton’s newest Americana outfit, bringing heart-shaking steel and foot-stomping banjo to the pubs of Hanover this summer. The band began as the acoustic duo Cattle and Roll, who spent some years playing Steve Earle covers and honing their songwriting skills. In the last year, finding strays at the bar of the Great Eastern with a shared love of Tyler Childers and Gillian Welch, they added drums, bass and pedal steel to the band – reinventing as Red River. Most recently, a lead guitar has completed their distinct sound: dreamy, driving, country folk songs about work, weather and birds.

After 22 years the band reformed for a one-off gig that coincided with singer Guy adopting the on-stage persona of glam rock-god Vince Venus and gaining international fame as the (unofficial) winner of Britain’s Got Talent in 2015. The Spectacular Story of Spectacles with Travis Elbrorough

Thursday 7th of September, 8pm

Tickets available now

The humble pair of glasses might just be one the world’s greatest inventions, allowing millions to see a world that might otherwise appear a blur. And yet how much do many of us even really think about these things perched on the ends of our noses?

Travis Elborough’s eye opening new book, Through the Looking Glasses, traces the fascinating true story of spectacles: from their inception as primitive visual aids to monkish scribes right through to today’s designer eyewear and the augmented reality of Google Glass. Join him as he relates in words and pictures encounters with ingenious medieval Italian glassmakers, myopic Renaissance rulers and spectacle-makers, as well as the silent movie star Harold Lloyd, the rock n roller Buddy Holly and the full-screen figure of Marilyn Monroe. Along, of course, with the legendary Sussex character Horace Albert Duke.

It’s all a question of vision and the need for humanity to see clearly, as Travis explores where the impulse to improve our eyesight has led us and where it might take us in the future.

TIM RICE-OXLEY is best known for Keane, as songwriter, keyboardist and a vocalist. He co-wrote their ten top 40 hit singles, which include Somewhere Only We Know, Everybody’s Changing and Is It Any Wonder. The hugely popular band had five consecutive number one albums, including their 2004 debut, Hopes and Fears, and The Best Of, released ten years-ago. 1st August – Action for Happiness

Action for Happiness

Doors 6.45pm // Latest Music Bar // Free Entry

Self-described as a “movement for positive social change”, Action for Happiness is a national charity aimed at increasing basic levels of happiness through whatever means they have and is a long-term friend of Latest Music Bar. Here’s what they have to say about their mission….

“Harcourt is one of the best singer/songwriters to emerge this millenium” – The Times

Depending on who you speak to, you will hear that Ed Harcourt was raised by wolves, he grew up in a Russian orphanage or discover that he was once part of a travelling circus, which perhaps explains his Coulrophobia. Truth is, he was born in the seventies (“the year punk broke, days before The King was dead”), and lived with his parents in East Sussex. Over the years, he has become a well-read, well-dressed, well-travelled English gent and a songwriter of some repute.

14th July – 48 Hour Film Fesitval Kickoff

Kickoff for the 48 Hour Film Project

14th of July, 6 pm

Take your chances and draw a genre, prop, and line for your film, and make something magic in a weekend

The 48 Hour Film Project is an exciting creative weekend with filmmakers making short films in an even shorter timeframe.

It all begins with the Friday night Kickoff event when you and teams in your city draw genres out of a hat and receive the required elements for your film.

Then it is off to the races—writing, shooting and editing and doing whatever it takes to submit your short film on Sunday night.

The big payoff is seeing your masterpiece in the big screen at a local theater. Every film, both on-time and late, will screen. There is nothing better than seeing your film with an audience and seeing firsthand how they react to your movie.

There’s still time to register here! Get your team in before July 14th!

8th July – META-CASETTE, THE FAMILY DOG, COSMIC BOS

META-CASETTE, THE FAMILY DOG, COSMIC BOS

Doors 7pm // Latest Music Bar // Tickets

META-CASSETTE
You heard right, dust off your ‘disco shoes’ because local band meta-cassette return to the latest music bar for a long awaited resurgence.
They’ve been bottling up their unique funky indie energy over the last couple of years and and its finally time to get the gang back together for what promises to be a great night out. They’ll of course be playing some of your favourites from their JIPSY MAGIC days along with some unreleased tracks fans will remember from previous gigs.
‘Fun, charismatic music that is laden with addictive qualities and being four friendly, approachable musicians who never fail to entertain. In short, they tick countless boxes with a massive musical marker’
https://www.facebook.com/metacassette

THE FAMILY DOG
Behind a North London house, guarded by Thor, a beast of a dog, THE FAMILY DOG built a home-made studio called The Box. 5 brothers chewing up Americana, soul, punk, blues, psychedelia & more, then howling it out in gigs resembling “a pack of wild dogs not giving a shit.” Swapping instruments, diving into crowds & embracing the chaos, they’re feral concoction of White Denim, The Black Keys, Curtis mayfield and The Band. Theirs is a story of gurus and adventures, sinners and saints. It all started with Miles Davies. 5 times, from eldest to youngest, mama Dogliani played ‘Kind Of Blue’ during childbirths, the sounds seeped in at stem cell level. Raised in an Irish commune, then Barnet with toy drum kits, old guitars and £5 violins, music was a family calling.

COSMIC BOS
Cosmic Bos are Nick and Andy Jackson, hosts of the Monthly Music Challenge Podcast that make unique and creative music and challenge others to create around different themes each month. Picking up a Judges Choice Award for their 2022 album ‘2 A.M, it’s Mission Time’, Cosmic Bos are rarely seen out in the musical wild and are making a rare live appearance for this special event. Catchy, upbeat, clever and quirky are all words which have been used to describe their music, with thoughtful lyrics and ear worms for days let the brothers Jackson take you on a cosmic tour of the music forest.

Their powerful songs capture the zeitgeist of Gen Z – from personal tracks on teenage love and Noah’s experience of toxic masculinity as a trans man, to political blasts at racism, corruption and the climate crisis. Panel discussion with

Karabekir Akkoyunlu, SOAS University of London

Thomas Lorman, University College London

Aleks Szczerbiak, University of Sussex

David Tal, University of Sussex

Moderated by

Ivor Gaber, University of Sussex

At the end of the Cold War, it seemed as though totalitarianism had finally been defeated, and liberal democracy had emerged victorious from the great ideological struggle of the 20th century. Today, democracy appears to be facing significant challenges, with many states that appeared to be making progress towards democratic governance a decade ago now experiencing a decline into authoritarianism. Examples include Hungary, Poland, Turkey, and most recently Israel. The challenges are not limited to developing countries but also affect the world’s most powerful democracies. We invite you to join us to discuss one of the most pressing issues of our time.

Karabekir Akkoyunlu is lecturer in the Politics of the Middle East.

His forthcoming book is Guardianship and Democracy in Iran and Turkey: Tutelary Consolidation, Popular Contestation (Edinburgh University Press). Currently his research agenda focuses on the limits of autorcatisation in countries undergoing democratic erosions.

Thomas Lorman, is lecturer in Central European History,

particularly Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, and have recently published a history of the Hungarian constitution, as well as a study of the Slovak People’s Party.

Aleks Szczerbiak is Professor of Politics.

His most recent book is Politicising the Communist Past: The Politics of Truth Revelation in Post-Communist Poland (Routledge 2018). He is currently writing a monograph on political parties and religion in post-communist Polish politics, and blogs regularly about the Polish political scene at https://wordpress.com/view/polishpoliticsblog.wordpress.com.

David Tal holds the Yossi Harel Chair in Modern Israel Studies.

His most recent book is The Making of an Alliance: The Origins and Development of the US-Israel Relationship (Cambridge University Press, 2021).

Ivor Gaber is Professor of Journalism at the University of Sussex. He is a broadcaster, writer, and media consultant.

The event is organised by The Sussex Weidenfeld Institute of Jewish Studies.
